Why an iPhone 7 Speaker Is Failing and How To Fix It

iPhone 7 was the first Apple iPhone to replace the separate headphone jack entirely and merge the headphone/lightning port in the same location at the bottom of the device. This was done in an attempt to make the iPhone more visually appealing, however, many iPhone 7 users preferred the convenience of the original separate headphone jack. When the speaker is not working effectively on the iPhone 7, the cause may be a software and/or hardware issue.

To help determine the root cause, Tech Genius has laid out the most common causes of iPhone 7 speaker failure and what to do to repair it.

1. Check The iPhone Ringer/Silent Switch

The purpose of the ringer/silent button is to quickly and conveniently turn the ringer off an on. The obvious culprit for the speaker that is not releasing sound may be that this switch has been turned off without your realization. To check if this is the case, try the following:

  • Look at the iPhone ringer switch, which is located on the left side of the iPhone 7. The iPhone is silent when there is a small, orange line on the switch.
  • Turn the switch on by pulling the tab towards the screen.

2. Check the Bluetooth

The problem may not be your speaker at all and instead just the sound going through another device instead of your iPhone speaker. If your Bluetooth is enabled, it’s likely that the sound may be going through a device in your vehicle, AirPods or a different speaker. To determine whether this is the case, proceed with the following:

  • Go into your iPhone Settings and find Bluetooth. Once Bluetooth is selected, disable any device it is connected to or turn off Bluetooth completely. Then, try the sound on your device to see if it has been restored.

3. Time For An Update

iPhone 7 devices regularly require iOS updates to restore any software bugs or update aesthetic features. If you haven’t updated your iOS lately, it may be in your best interest to do this as it may restore the speaker issue. Firstly, you have to check if there is an available iOS update. To do so, try the following:

  • Go into your Settings app and select General. Under General, locate Software Update and select it.
  • You may see a coloured number located beside the Software Update, which indicates the iOS updates available.
  • Click the tab and before updating the device, ensure you have backed up your information to the iCloud. Then, proceed to update the device by following instructions.
  • After the iPhone 7 has been updated and restored, check on the speaker by calling or playing music or video to verify it has been fixed.
